Every year around this time my boys start coughing. It comes with the change in weather and lingers for what seems like forever. It sounds worse than it probably is, but better to address it immediately, than to let it linger. After all, that’s how infections are formed. That said, it’s important to allow the body to take care of business. Rather than suppress the cough, this syrup helps strengthen and support the lungs while they do their job.
All you need is filtered water, thyme and honey – preferably local.
Thyme is also anti-baterial and anti-viral.
This syrup tastes good and smells even better. As a yummy treat I mixed three tablespoons of the syrup into some carbonated water for a delicious herbal soda!
Thyme Cough Syrup
4 cups filtered water
2 cups dried thyme
1 cup honey
Combine the water and thyme together in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to lowest setting and allow the mixture to simmer until half of the water has evaporated (about an hour or more). Strain the thyme and allow the tea to cool slightly. Add the honey and stir.
Take 1 to 2 teaspoons every hour until symptoms subside.
Store in refrigerator where it will last 3 – 4 weeks.
