Supergreen Energy Smoothie

When I made this smoothie the other day, Saeso, who has been avoiding any stimulants lately asked me “what does this have in it? I feel really energized?” “Me too!” I said.

The secret here is fresh dandelion. If you’re not hip to dandelion yet, you must acquaint yourself. Dandelion has amazing healing properties. It’s especially good for cleansing and detoxifying the liver, is really high in vitamins A and K, and has loads of calcium. It’s insane that most people consider this a weed and actually throw it in the trash.

The other secret ingredient here is parsley. Both parsley and dandelion are rich in iron. Also, both are considered to have bitter taste. In Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine taste is important. Different tastes embody different energies and different healing properties. The standard Western diet is generally lacking in bitter tastes. People aren’t used to it, so they don’t really like it. But I’ve read that the more you dislike bitter taste, the more your body needs it. Bitter is cooling and drying and promotes digestion.

This smoothie, in my opinion, isn’t overly bitter. You can adjust the amount of sweetener to compensate if need be, but try to get accustomed to it. You might experience some unexpected rewards.

Finally, this recipe includes a tablespoon of spirulina. Spirulina is an algae the is often considered a superfood. I like including powdered greens sometimes like wheatgrass, kelp and chlorella. I was really into spirulina a few months back because it’s supposed to be super rich in trace minerals, but I’ve since read questionable things about it. It lends a really rich green color to the smoothie, which I love, but it’s totally optional.

Supergreen Energy Smoothie
makes 2 servings


1 cup frozen mangoes
1 cup frozen pineapple
2 dates
7 sprigs fresh, organic dandelion
7 spring fresh, organic parsley
1 tablespoon spirulina – optional
2 cups filtered water

Make it:

Place all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.
