It’s All Love With Myka 9

Do you know Myka 9? I hope so. He is one of the greatest to grace a piece of wax, a true game changer. If you know Bone Thugs’n Harmony, then you know his style offspring. Seriously, we need to get Suge Knight to Vanilla Ice those dudes and get Myka his due. Before we get into our conversation, let’s look at this man’s resume: ghost wrote for N.W.A., part of the legendary Freestyle Fellowship, a member of Haiku D’Etat, is said to have coined the phrase “freestyle”, and can out rhyme (or freestyle) your favorite emcee (guaranteed).

Here’s a track off his most recent release…

We recently got to catch up with the GoodLife emcee and talk food, you know how we do…

M9: You need to hear Kenny Segal’s album, Ken Can Cook. That album is perfect for you. It’s music inspired by food. That project is perfect for you!

I’ve been up on that album and he’s right, it’s dope!

TKM: Well, you obviously played a role in that project. I think “Mood Food” was the name of the piece you collaborated on. Can you talk about your relationship with food, and specifically how it relates to the creation of your music?

M9: Food, more than just a fuel, calorically speaking – it inspires me because if I eat the right amount of food and right…Ayurvedically speaking, you know I get that energy and then sometimes, like when I eat heavier foods I don’t want to work on music…so, yeah.

TKM: Oh, Ayurvedic huh? Word.

Well, I just want to mention, for our readers that aren’t familiar with the Ayurvedic lifestyle, it’s basically the world’s oldest health care system. It’s based on the idea of food as medicine, eating the right thing for your optimal health. Look, I’m no expert but I do know that in order to sustain and maintain healthy balance within yourself, each person must first identify their dosha so that they can eat according to their needs. It’s deep. It’s dope. Check it…you can figure out your own dosha by visiting The Chopra Center and taking the quiz.

TKM: Well, I know you travel quite a bit, can you talk about food culture in America and how it compares to food culture in other places?

M9: Well, American food I’m used to. And other places, like, you know in the U.K. I don’t really like the meat and stuff…that much, uh…off and on I’m vegetarian. I was vegetarian for like 10 years. And then, I’m flexible now. Um…when I was in Amsterdam I had some Indonesian food that was really good. I was in Japan a couple months ago, I like their food. I steer clear of stuff that’s really gamey and stuff that’s a little bit out of what my pallet’s used to. I have to admit, um…I love Ethiopian food…and Indian food.

TKM: So, you’re really able to appreciate food from cultures outside of the U.S.?

M9: Yeah…

TKM: Are you good at cooking? Do you cook? You get down in the kitchen?

M9: I’m actually pretty good. I season to taste when I cook. And sometimes I use the same seasonings in almost everything that I cook. I end up using a lot of Creole-Cajun seasonings. And um…yeah.

TKM: Is there a recipe you’d like to share, or a dish that you make really well?

M9: I got a good vegetarian spaghetti that I make. And it’s beautiful because I make the vegetarian pasta taste like meat. Yeah…vegetarian pasta – spaghetti.

TKM: Alright, thanks I appreciate your time. We’re gonna hafta try our hand at making our own vegetarian pasta…gluten-free of course.

M9: It’s all love.

It was a unique opportunity talking to Myka 9 about food. I’m glad to have had the opportunity to share what little I know about Ayurveda, hopefully I will have planted a seed in the back of your mind or made you at least a little bit curious. You will definitely be hearing more about it as we continue to talk to artists. Surprisingly, there are quite a few people that are up on their Dosha and hip to the the Ayurvedic lifestyle. Wifey, is even being trained in the Ayurvedic arts as we speak. The one thing I took away from my time with Myka 9 is…It’s All Love. It was the phrase and theme that he kept coming back to throughout the night. And it happens to be the premise to which we here at TheKitchenMix subscribe to and try to put out to all our friends and readers. It’s all love, folks. It’s all love and it’s all beautiful. Peace.

Just gonna leave you with this KitchenMix favorite…
