Grapefruit & Greens Smoothie

There’s nothing better than the buzz you get from drinking a fresh green smoothie. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you must get on board. It turns out that a serving of greens in a jar does much more to wake you up than your favorite espresso or energy drink.

If you tune in to your body, and really take the time to notice how certain foods make you feel, you’ll soon begin to truly appreciate the potency of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Though it’s very subtle, I’ve come to discover a tingling sensation that courses through my body when I drink a green smoothie. It’s totally different from the jolting buzz that caffeine tends to provide. This other feeling is what this blog is all about – higher vibrations. You probably couldn’t meditate after a cup of coffee, but you could definitely tune in after something like this.

The key, I’ve discovered, is to focus more on the greens and less on the fruits. The feeling just isn’t the same when fruits tip the scales (though it does make a delicious drink). Greens are where the magic is, full of phytochemicals like chlorophyll. Phytochemicals are what gives plants their color while chlorophyll is responsible for turning sunshine into energy. I imagine this smoothie doing the same for me – bringing light into my cells, and since green is the color for the heart chakra, I imagine this drink bringing light into my heart.

In addition to being the perfect breakfast, make yourself a dose of this when you feel the need to cool off, whether that be figuratively or literally. Nourishing your heart energy center with raw green food provides a cooling effect and can help us tune in to all the love there is in the world. We could all use the reminder.

Grapefruit and Greens Smoothie

Ingredients for two:

7-8 large lettuce leaves
2 celery stalks
2/3 cucumber
Juice from 1 freshly squeezed lime
handful of cilantro
1 cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
1 cup water

Method:

Place the cucumber and celery stalks into a high speed blender followed by the lettuce, lime juice, grapefruit juice and water. Process to desired consistency. Serve immediately.
